Research camps on dolphins and sea turtles

le nostre attivita_staff_2

Become a volunteer for dolphins and sea turtles in the Aeolian Archipelago (Italy)!  You can spend an enthusiastic week living in a typical Aeolian house in the wonderful Island of Filicudi. During the research weeks the volunteers will be involved in making daily boat excursions for monitoring cetaceans and sea turtles and assisting the research personnel to collect data. As regards the cetaceans the research activities are mainly focused on the population of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and  striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), but in some periods of the year it is possible to sight fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). The monitoring sessions will be also dedicated to identifying and mapping the foraging areas for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta and to rescue individuals with different problems, such as longlines ingestion or boat collision. As a volunteer you will also participate at the first aid and care of the sea turtles in the Rescue Centre of Filicudi and consequently to the release of turtles at sea.

The registration for the research camps on cetaceans and sea turtles in Filicudi (Aeolian Islands, Italy) for spring-summer 2018 will start on January 2018. The research camp is open to everybody without any specific preparation but it only requires great passion for the sea, enthusiasm and ability to adapt in order to enjoy for a week in the wild island of Filicudi. Usually our volunteers are students or graduates in science, but this does not preclude the participation of anyone who wants to have this experience. The research camps include daily monitoring sessions by boat on cetaceans and sea turtles (you will be engaged in the boat all morning). During the boat tours you will be involved as volunteers to sight the animals and help us to data collection and fill in the data sheets for our research projects. In the research camps it is also included a specific seminar about the research projects and on the equipment used in the boat so you can be prepared when you make a sighting. The lessons are held at our turtle point of Filicudi, the center where we carry out environmental education and first aid in specimens of sea turtles. During the search fields in the afternoon will be free to enjoy the island (diving or snorkeling) or even participate (not included in the participation fee) activities carried out by the excursion (snorkeling led by marine biologist, island tours and nature geological, etc. see www.filicudiconservation.com). You can also give us a helping hand at the Turtle Point with tourists asking for information on research projects, who want to participate in the touristic activities or who want to buy our dolphin-adoption programmes (t-shirts, etc.) Whose purchase helps us support expenses of the association.

Many experiences will be on the field and if you will be lucky with the weather conditions, you might sight dolphins ( bottlenose dolphin and striped dolphin) and other cetaceans (fin whale and sperm whale), species of fish (sunfish, tuna, swordfish, billed spearfish, etc . . ) , sighting sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in their feeding habitats, participate to rescues activities of sea turtles found at sea with different problems (such as bycatch in longlines or ingestion of marine debris) or to release of sea turtles rehabilitated at our Turtle Point. Finally, it is frequent to find carcasses of whales and sea turtles and you will attend to the necropsy of the carcass in order to identify the causes of death and collect different biological samples.

Finally, if you want to learn, you will help us to fill up the datasheet entering the daily survey data in the computer learning different types of statistical analysis. I repeat, however, that the afternoon is free and you can freely decide what to do. If you need the credits for the University I recommend doing the application to your Secretary's office before leaving for the session. We have agreements with various Italian universities and credits have always been awarded to students who have requested it.
