First Aid for Sea Turtles

11 novembre

The area of the Aeolian Archipelago presents the problem of many sea turtles being found in serious distress due to lesions, injuries or pathologies of various kinds as a result of interaction with anthropogenic factors. Fishing activity, boat traffic and ingestion of marine debris are among the most notable problems for the individuals of Caretta caretta in the area of the Aeolian Archipelago. In order to deal with these problems Filicudi WildLife Conservation rescues from the sea the turtles. Having received approval for the research and protection projects on the Caretta caretta species and having received full Authorization for rescuing and assisting sea turtles from the Ministry for the Environment and for the Protection of the Territory and the Sea (PROT 0006876 25-01-2013) the work group is to all intents and purposes a “first aid nucleus” in the Aeolian area. At the present time the  FIRST AID CENTRE FOR SEA TURTLES  is located at the harbour of Pecorini mare.  Inside there are tanks suitable for the transport and temporary stay of the animals under care. The centre is open to visitors during the summer and it also contains a photographic exhibition and a small museum regarding dolphins and sea turtles.
